Red Salmon and a Starfish

Here are a few shots from where I work: a tub of filleted reds waiting to get thrown into a fish waste receptacle, a homemade birthday card for the owner of the business with a suffering starfish attached and a couple of shots of what happens to salmon after they die.

Moose Spotting

A couple of weeks ago we spotted a moose in the back yard. Bob and I wanted to get as close as possible, but Becky sat on the deck and shot us both glaring looks that said "leave the beast alone."

In other news, I quit my temporary position at the Beluga Lake Lodge. As much fun as serving an average of one drink per hour might be, with a good helping of passive sexual harassment on the side, I decided it was time to move towards the bigger and better. Recently Becky and I drove by and found a sign on the restaurant door stating "closed due to mechanical failures." What they were really getting at might have read "closed due to a complete lack of interest from employees and patrons alike." So long, Belugs. I'll be missing you!

Beach Walking

Bishop's Beach was perfect today. We found a porch swing that someone had hauled out and placed on a wooden pallet where we sat and watched the water, birds and people walking their dogs. I'm definitely going to miss Homer a little.

Well, that pretty much says it all.

Tide Is Low

I learned three important things today. 1. Sometimes driftwood is actually a sea otter. 2. Natalie looks cute in rubber boots. 3. Watching people eat oysters isn't fun or educational.

For the Road

Someday I'm going to buy Becky and I one of these sexy little T@B trailers so we can see every inch of this continent. Gorgeous!

Cell Phone Gems

From the top: Alaska pride, Beluga Lake Slough and Homer Spit (the turret used to be part of a castle that was located out East End Road but apparently someone dragged it to the spit to class it up a notch)

Beach Fire

We had an extraordinary day! Molasses & cherry pancakes for breakfast, a 6 mile hike through meadows and forests, then a campfire and cookout on the beach for dinner. We had locally grown arugula with a dash of sea salt, fresh halibut with butter and garlic, and a coal-baked cinnamon apple to top it off.

Back to the working routine tomorrow.

A Long and Thankless Journey

It is difficult to describe the frenzied preparations we witnessed in the weeks preceding the much anticipated arrival of those who completed the "Hoka Hey Challenge". In case you didn't hear, the Hoka Hey was an extremely long fundraising motorcycle ride from the Florida Keys to Homer, Alaska . The winners arrived a few days ago and the road weary remainder are still trickling in. For more information and some of the worst writing ever published in a newspaper please click here. The Salty Dawg and several other bars were expecting a rush of epic proportions and hired extra help (like us) to appease the thirsty masses. Sadly, it was a paltry turnout due to the unfriendly 7000 mile ride. Uhhh, go figure.

Incidentally, "hoka hey" is Lakota for "come now" not "it's a good day to die," which is the slogan that is being repeated, reprinted and regurgitated by all of the local media. Google it peeps, it's so easy.

On the Up

Hey all - we fell off the blogging wagon for a bit due to a variety of things. Most of it had to do with my (temporary) emotional crack-up, but those shenanigans have been put to rest. In the past couple weeks the following things have happened:
-We secured a lovely truck to drive! Truckie, and she's a real beaut. (Thanks Bridget!!!)
-One of the cats took a big poop on our bed while we watched in confused horror.
-Started season 3 of Weeds (heavy on the zany hijinx).
-Got another job at the cheesiest bar of all time - entirely wood paneled with popcorn ceiling and perma-customers from the early 1970s.
-Saw a huge bear while on a walk by myself; he stood up and stared me down until I ran in the other direction (turns out that's the #1 don't-do...oopsh).

-The sun came out.

Pictures from the top: 1&2. A close moose encounter on East End Road which was both exciting and disturbing. Natalie kept asking me "What do you want to do?!" the entire time the moose were in our vicinity. Good question. 3. Regal eagle. 4. The view from Bridget's new cabin on the ridge. 5. "Homer Alaska, The Halibut Capital of the World". 6. Horse head. 7. We love Truckie! 8. Dorks.
